SUNNINGHILL CEMETERY

This quiet burial ground is situated behind St Michael and All Angels Church, Church Road, Sunninghill, Ascot, SL5 7DD.

Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council maintain and looks after the graveyard.  The first burial in Parish Council’s register took place in September 1950.  The graveyard is divided into sections for record-keeping, with the older section to the rear of the church now closed.  It is also home to a number of official war graves that are looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.  Thomas Holloway, the founder of Royal Holloway, University of London and Holloway Sanatorium, is also buried here.

Other notable local residents buried in the church’s graveyard include Rear-Admiral Sir Home Riggs Popham (1762-1820), a naval commander who invented a system of maritime signaling now used by the Royal Navy.

Please be aware that the car park at the top of the cemetery, which belongs to St Michael and All Angels Church, is only open between the hours of 10am to 4pm, every day.  Outside these hours the cemetery can only be accessed on foot, and cars must be carefully parked on Church Lane, allowing access for emergency vehicles at all times. If you have any queries regarding this, please contact the Church Administrator via email at admin@ssaparish.org.
